The Croatian Computer Society (CITS), the ECDL National Operator in Croatia, operates e-Kids, an ECDL Foundation endorsed programme, in Croatia. The e-Kids programme has an integral approach for enabling children to become digitally literate. The e-Kids certification contains three main components:
- Multimedia CD-ROM (for preschool age children)
- e-Kids Box
- e-Kids Magazine (monthly)
The approach develops digital literacy at an early age in order to enable children to use ICT efficiently in any life situation - in school, at home, for fun and for a variety of other purposes. It enables children to learn to how to communicate using the SMS function on mobile phones and provides the skills necessary for learning through fun computer games. The e-Kids box contains a manual (written as a series of cartoons and illustrated with numerous cartoon characters), a CD-ROM with two games (that can be used to gain ICT skills in a fun and interactive manner) and a certification programme (that tests the child’s knowledge and skills).
The teacher signs a Skills Card, which attests that the child has completed the test without any help. The teacher sends the signed Skills Card to the Croatian Computer Society (CITS), which prints a certificate and/or ID card. The child can then use the certificate/ID card as a verification of their digital literacy.
