A large scale ICDL accreditation campaign has begun in Somaliland, in partnership between Specto and the Ministry of Higher Education. The campaign began with two workshops on IT security and project planning, delivered by Specto at Hargeisa University.
34 trainees from 12 universities, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Telecommunication and Technology, and a private telecoms company, attended the workshops, along with representatives from the Civil Service Institute. Another workshop followed, covering the ICDL Base modules.
The workshops were arranged by Dr Yousef Ahmad, the Director General of Higher Education, and were inaugurated by Dr Yassin Mahmoud, the Minister of Education and Science, and Dr Abdilwali Al Soufi, the Minister of Telecommunication and Technology, in the presence of Dr Mahmoud Yousef, the President of Hargeisa University.
The University of Hargeisa was the first university in Somaliland that expressed an interest in endorsing the ICDL program. It is a public coeducational higher education institution founded in 2000, with more than 6,000 students. The university offers degree and non-degree courses in different areas of study. Specto assisted the university in meeting all ICDL requirements for accreditation. This encouraged other universities to follow the lead and start with the accreditation process.
